Proposition 8 California? Shame!

prop8Last night I called out Alaska and today I will stick to the Western seaboard of these United States of America. The Golden State is now the hateful state and for that you should be ashamed.

The voters and thereby the people of California recently passed Proposition 8. This proposition amended the State Constitution to add “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

Despite electing a minority president there are still prejudices out there. Clearly there is a fear if not a hatred towards homosexuals in this country. Religious organizations have strongly supported the passing of proposition 8.

Religious organizations that supported Proposition 8 include the Roman Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, American Family Association, Focus on the Family and the National Organization for Marriage, Saddleback Church, The Bishops of the California Catholic Conference, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). The last of which publicly supported the proposition and encouraged their membership to donate money and volunteer time.

The First Presidency of the church announced its support for Proposition 8 in a letter read in every congregation. Latter-day Saints provided a significant source for financial donations in support of the proposition, both inside and outside the State of California. About 45% of out-of-state contributions to ProtectMarriage.com came from Utah, over three times more than any other state.

Mormons, who would of thought they hated gay marriage so much? This discrimination against fellow Americans, this Anti-American bill and ideology promoted by these religious organizations is shameful.

I once thought that these organizations opened their arms to anyone. Why would the marriage of two people be of such concern to other people that they are willing to fight to keep them apart. I sometimes wonder what the creators of these religions would think if they saw the way their religions are being led today?

I am very disappointed that a state which has been so progressive in its thinking, a state which is leading the nation when it comes to key issues has this one issue so wrong.

California for a state that has done a lot, you still have more to do. The same sex couples I have met don’t want to get married to spite the church. These couples don’t want to get married to start destroying the foundations of opposite sex couples.

These couples want to be able to say they are married to the person they love just as any other person wants. Now you may ask, why do you have to throw marriage in there, isn’t a civil union the same?

It’s not. In California a Domestic partnership can take place when one party of the couple is at least 62 years old. If it is the same thing then why allow civil unions and not marriages?

Separate but equal is unconstitutional. We are all one people, we should all have the same rights regardless of creed, age, sex, religion or any other factor. This is the United States of America.

For those of you who will claim I am a tried and true blue liberal, I have got some news for you. I worship an awesome god and attend church. I initially supported this war in Iraq and support our troops. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

I will not allow these religious institution to impose their beliefs on the government. We have a separation of Church and State. I read to you Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom

Whereas Almighty God hath created the mind free; that all attempts to influence it by temporal punishments or burdens, or by civil incapacitations, tend only to beget habits of hypocrisy and meanness, and are a departure from the plan of the Holy author of our religion, who being Lord both of body and mind, yet chose not to propagate it by coercions on either, as it was in his Almighty power to do; that the impious presumption of legislators and rulers, civil as well as ecclesiastical, who being themselves but fallible and uninspired men, have assumed dominion over the faith of others, setting up their own opinions and modes of thinking as the only true and infallible, and as such endeavouring to impose them on others, hath established and maintained false religions over the greatest part of the world, and through all time; that to compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves, is sinful and tyrannical

We had it right once. California, I emplore you to realize the error of your ways.
